International Cultural Heritage Law

The summer school aims to develop the students%E2%80%99 awareness of the main substantive themes of international cultural heritage law, namely: The trade in cultural objects and the restitution of stolen or looted artworks The protection of cultural property in times of war The protection of the built heritage from natural and human-induced disasters The safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage and the protection of the diversity of cultural expressions The relationship between cultural heritage law and the activities of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)For this purpose, the instructors will examine the legal instruments adopted by UNESCO, such as the %E2%80%98Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict%E2%80%99, the %E2%80%98Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property%E2%80%99, and the %E2%80%98Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage%E2%80%99. Moreover, in order to offer an up-to-date glance at international cultural heritage law, the summer course will focus on the different ideological positions of the relevant stakeholders and on its complex relationship with other fields of law %E2%80" namely general international law, human rights law, intellectual property law, and international investment law %E2%80" and with the issue of dispute settlement. Finally, this course aims to bring out the challenges to cultural heritage that emanate from new threats. To name but a few: reduced protection of sites and monuments due to lack of public money and political support; natural catastrophes; and damage to cultural sites caused by human activities.Course Program 2015 (Will be published early 2015)

The faculty brings together brilliant young scholars and renowned professors from various prestigious universities. The University of Geneva staff comprises the team of the Art-Law Centre and of the UNESCO Chair in the International Law of the Protection

Target group
Upper year undergraduates, Master's degree students, PhD students from law and all other faculties, including art history, archaeology and anthropology, as well as practitioners, non-specialists and art enthusiasts.

Credits info
3 ECTS Each summer school will indicate its equivalence in ECTS credits in its description. Participants will be provided with a Certificate of Completion of the course if they satisfy attendance and evaluation requirements. It is the participant's responsibility to verify the validity of the course and validate it at their home university prior to participating in the course.
