The term %E2%80%9CBig Data%E2%80%9D refers to various forms of large amount of data, which requires specific computing platforms for their analysis. The challenges on LINKED, OPEN, BIG DATA include capturing, curation, storage, searching, sharing, transferring, analysis, and visualization.EarthBiAs2015 Covered TopicsEarthBias 2015 Summer School program provides a unique opportunity for participants to interact with a group of scientists from distinguished international institutions. Issues related to real environmental applications will be addressed interdisciplinary with the use of Data Analysis, Information Technology and Mathematics. The individual sections, derived from lectures, workshops and round tables, are related to big data systems, flexible and dynamic structures which can meet future requirements, sensors and softwares, statistical methods and to their implementation for the analysis and simulation of environmental systems. The topics covered by the Summer School are:%E2%80%A2%09Understanding the specific characteristics of Big Data%E2%80%A2%09Database Systems%E2%80%A2%09Analysis of multidimensional data%E2%80%A2%09Mathematical models for data mining%E2%80%A2%09Data management and analysis%E2%80%A2%09New technologies and softwares%E2%80%A2%09Application of all the above in simulation examples of different environmental systems.Courses will be offered in various ways, including lectures, tutorials, collaborative workshops and round table discussions. The team of Summer School instructors has a long track in academic training, industrial research projects and scientific publications in the areas of Big Data Analysis and Simulation of Environmental Systems. This may lead to the publication of scientific papers and the writing of innovative project proposals, with the participants/students.EarthBiAs2015 is organised by the School of Sciences of the University of the Aegean. It is an International Summer School on Big Data Analysis in Earth Sciences and will be held in Rhodes from 31st of August to 4th of September 2015. Course leader
Dr. Demetris F. Lekkas is Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, University of the Aegean

Target group
The Summer School program is planned to attract students, researchers and professionals from the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology.

Course aim
In this new era of data-intensive systems and increasing demand for evidence-based decisions/actions upon critical societal challenges, it is more than essential to build new curricula shaping the future BIG DATA experts. New value chains of OPEN, LINKED and BIG DATA management, analysis and processing have been created, in order for businesses and public administrations to exploit this new potential. Consequently, reformation and restructure of business processes in both domains have evolved in the creation of new positions striving out for data scientists or to be more precise BIG DATA experts.

Credits info
3 ECTS A total of 3 ECTS points will be granted to successful participants, that have completed a research paper, to be assigned during the e-GOV Summer School and delivered 6 weeks after the end of the Summer School.
