Introduction to Quantitative Thinking in Archaeology
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
The course provides an introduction to several research techniques with a common theoretical background. It is composed of 10 sessions, each lasting 3 hours and focused on one particular tool. The teachers for each module have in-depth of the technique in question and of its application to archaeological data. This course will provide a general overview of the most recent tools being used by archaeologists. It is intended for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD students who want to learn how quantitative methods can be applied to fields such as archaeometry, environmental archaeology and cultural transmission. This Summer School will have a strategic impact for the University of Barcelona, with projects such as Simulpast (http://www.simulpast.es) and EPNet (http://www.roman-ep.net/) transforming the city of Barcelona and UB into one of the stand-out European centres for research in this field. Each module will be divided in one hour of theoretical explanations and a two hours practical session in the computer lab. The evaluation will be made based on the results of these practices. All the tools (R, RStudio, and Python) will be open-source, and the materials (slides, datasets, source code) will be openly available in order to allow students to continue their work after the course.

International Students and Professionals interested in the topic

Course aim
The recent years have seen a major development of new theoretical and practical tools that improve our understanding of social behaviour. Complexity Science, Cultural Evolution and Spatio-temporal Analysis are only some of the new techniques that are helping researchers in the task of understanding the patterns generated by human society. From this perspective, archaeology is one of the most interesting where this new approach is being applied, as its long-term perspective on the human past can help us to explore concepts such as climate change, resilience or cultural change. The fast pace of research makes difficult for classical degree courses to explain these new techniques that are changing the discipline. For this reason, there is a need that new students learn the potential and practicality of these tools.
