calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
Media organisations are facing challenges as their environment is reconfigured by digital convergence. Old ways of doing journalism do not apply, and new ways of producing digital content and multimedia packages to different platforms (online, mobile and tablets) are only just emerging. This course focuses on technological innovations in digital journalism, and how ICT-related features modify journalistic storytelling in the multimedia environment. The aim of the course is to give both a conceptual and methodological understanding of digital journalism and computational thinking. The course will introduce the students to: 1) digital and social innovations in media digital journalism, 2) computational thinking and new practices in relation to media and digital journalism, and 3) research methods to analyse the new digital journalism and media environment (multimedia storytelling, infographics, datajournalism, news applications, and APIs).The course is divided in three different parts: 1) an introduction to computational thinking, ICT, and digital journalism, 2) methods and concepts for analysing digital media and journalism, and 3) a research project on innovations in digital journalism. For each of the following activities, we explore, analyse, and make content-presentations on examples: 1) students are introduced to examples of industry-based innovative it-based journalistic projects, 2) students are introduced to methodological tools to assess the quality of it-based journalistic projects, and 3) students are introduced to the analytical tools to innovate it-based journalistic projects.
