Law and Contemporary British Culture
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
This module runs in the second session: July 4 - July 25. This module considers the relationship between law and popular culture, focusing on areas of contemporary British culture where the law seeks to regulate activities and lifestyles. In particular it will analyse three particular areas of interaction: lifestyles and leisure - how the law has been used to regulate activities such as football fandom, countryside sports, travellers, body-piercing, recreational drug use, raves etc; cultural tolerance within a multi ethnic society - female genital mutilation, the Rushdie case, the protection of religion; the visual media - censorship of images, control of exhibitions such as work by Mapplethorpe, Ofili and so on. The key to the module is a consideration of the effectiveness of law as a means of controlling and restricting culture. Comparisons will be drawn with other jurisdictions, notably the USA.
