In the context of highly deregulated and volatile business environment, professional organizations require leadership, strategy, adaptability and coordination on a scale never before imagined. In this regard the major challenge is, %E2%80%9Chow to design a work organization that can quickly adapt with the dynamic market realities?%E2%80%99%E2%80%99 The employees%E2%80%99 and customers%E2%80%99 needs and demands are ever changing and competitors adopt better ways of doing business, which create the pressure on an organization%E2%80%99s capability to align with the internal processes (structure and culture) and external challenges (competitors and customers) to remain efficient and effective. Thus organizational structure and culture of the organization should support the strategic choices. Such concerns have been the subject matter of numerous popular management books e.g., Good to Great, In Search of Excellence, Built to Last, Blue Ocean Strategy etc.Furthermore, technological advantage, financial planning, and marketing skills are important, but they must be coupled with competencies related to designing work organizations and the people management practices. Thus managers need to align their personal competencies to successfully establish and transforming a business enterprise. Organizations need managers with high such a leadership potential right at the entry stage. Hence, I have designed %E2%80%9CLeading and Designing Organizations%E2%80%9D course to help the leaders to understand how organizations works from inside in terms of strategies, structure, system, culture and human resource and how managers can develop some of the required competencies to design or redesign a company%C2%B4%C2%B4. The purpose of designing the organization is to reinforce mutual dependencies to mobilize innovative and spontaneous behavior among employees. Thus this course provides students with the social science tools needed to solve organizational problems and prepare leaders to understand how to organize the task, coordinate across the teams, motivate the human capital of the firm, manage the social networks, develop emotional intelligence and conflict management skills, and initiate organizational transformation.Main issuesIn cases studies of several successful organizations Southwest Airlines, McKinsey, 3M, J&J, GE, P&G, Walt Disney, it is seen that empowered employees and the design of a learning organization often improve productivity, profits and suitability. As a starting point, this course is organized around three different perspectives on organizations: the strategic design perspective, the politicalperspective, and the cultural perspective. Each of them offers a different angle on what is an organization, and each offers different tools for action. I have designed and developed business games and selected case studies that relevant to imbibe such competencies among the participants. As the part of my teaching philosophy, I believe in making things simple and comfortably better for the students.
