Legal, Economic, and Political Governance of Ressource Exploitation in the Arctic Ocean
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
In the area of global environmental climate change, some very important driving factors in the Arctic are the global demand for natural resources, such as oil, gas, uranium, rare earth elements etc., and the local need for foreign investments. In this context, the Arctic is hotter than ever, as it is considered the region per excellence for future business opportunities. However, investing in the Arctic also involves challenges, as it is the most sensitive environment with a sensible indigenous society of people, who have long depended on fishing and hunting to provide revenue and livelihood. This course is a unique opportunity to learn about the current legal, economic and political governance of oil, gas and mining exploitation in the Arctic. Greenland and the Arctic Ocean will be used as the basis for case studies. In the course, we take into account the new challenges of climate change by relating to contracts on investment, the Greenlandic economy, the role of public authorities and companies in the environmental and social impact assessment and granting of licence, liability issues, etc., as well as the use of sustainability clauses in business guidelines as part of the protection of environmental and indigenous rights. Lecturers will be academics working in multidisciplinary teams and also experts from the multinational corporations of the sectors, who will be using case studies to exemplify the challenges and new opportunities in the business sector and the significant gaps existing in international law, particularly on issues of Arctic Ocean governance and territorial conflicts. The course will also dedicate a special attention to the environmental security dimension in the Arctic Ocean governance and the role and interests of other strategic important non-Arctic States, such as for example China. The output of the course will not only give participants a solid understanding of the existing regulatory and business knowledge in a multidisciplinary perspective, but will also give them the ability to apply the %E2%80%9CArctic interdisciplinary toolbox.%E2%80%9D The Arctic interdisciplinary toolbox presented in this course can be used as the knowledge base for people, who want to work in this new area of global challenges, where there is a need for new initiatives that must be carried out in the most sustainable manner.
