Migration and Diaspora

This introductory course will provide the participants with overall understanding of the transnational nature of the modern world as it relates to migration and migrants, and related issues in the field of anthropology, politics, cultural studies, development and globalisation. The programme of study employs a multidisciplinary approach, with both teaching from academics and workshops delivered by diaspora professionals. Through this structure, the participants will develop a broad understanding of the main areas of study in this field, and the ability to refer to particular case studies from the literature as well as practical examples where required. The course comprises a combination of lectures and interactive workshops, as well as museum visits and social events.

On successful completion of the course, a student should be able to demonstrate the ability to:Understanding the roles that migration and migrants play in the transnational and global networks, relating these issues to current debates in the fields of anthropology, politics, cultural studies, development and globalisationEngage with contemporary debates concerning immigration, diasporas, refugees, and other migrant groups with a solid evidence baseEmploy a multidisciplinary approach to the study of migration and diaspora, incorporating learning from academic teaching as well as from workshops delivered by diaspora practitioners

7.5 ECTS Please note that summer courses are not accredited by SOAS.Students are usually able to obtain credits from their home institution and typically our courses receive 3 credits in the US system and 7.5 ECTS in the European system. If you intend to claim credits from your home institution, please check the requirements with them before you enrol. We will be happy to assist you in any way we can, however please be aware that the decision to award credits rests with your home institution.Assessment will be optional and will vary for each course. Participants will be provided with a certificate of attendance and transcripts will be available on request.
