This is a hands-on, learning by doing course, in which you, as a student, will solve problems occurring in the field of logistics using state of the art software. The main focus of the course will be on the modelling perspective and on how the modelling choices affect the different solution approaches.Mathematical modelling is more a (dark) art than a science in the sense that experience and knowledge of tricks, do%E2%80%99s and don%E2%80%99t%E2%80%99s play a vital role. Therefore, you will through the course be faced with assignments which will give you an understanding of how your modelling choices affect the solution approaches. It is, however, not enough to know how to model a problem you also need to solve it. For that reason, you will study classical as well as state of the art solution procedures such as linear programming, integer linear programming, branch and bound, branch and cut and Lagrangean relaxation.Lectures will be used to introduce and explain new topics and will be followed by practical sessions where you will have to model and solve problems based on cases within logistics. During the practical sessions a tutor will present to answer questions and help you grasping the material. You should expect to work on the course every day in the two weeks the course runs. The final grade will be based on two hand-in assignments, one each week, and a three hour written exam.
