Perspectives on Cultural Pluralism - Canada and Beyond
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
In today%E2%80%99s plural societies, manifestations of cultural diversity are of great interest to many different academic disciplines. In this summer school, issues of diversity and equality, migration and minorities, intergroup relations and identities will be examined from different perspectives. Scholars from religious studies, cultural geography, social psychology, journalism, media studies and arctic studies will discuss the current state of affairs in their fields of study, resulting in comparisons between them. Within these discussions, special attention will be paid to the Canadian case. Canada has considered diversity a national asset since the 1970s and is proud of its cultural mosaic. If the Canadian model is often used as an example for other plural societies, it has also been argued that it fails to address the structural inequalities inherited from Canada%E2%80%99s colonial past, thus upholding white dominance. In the different sessions, we will also address these problems and consider new concepts for sustainable diverse societies.
