Power, Media and Democracy

This course explores the relations between power, media and democracy. Students will learn- to reconstruct different theories that are helpful to understand the relations between power, media and democracy;- to reflect on central problems related to it, such as the tension between the ideal and the real, the emergence of the surveillance society, the power of media tycoons, the decline of the public sphere, the threats of media power, political representation, pluralism and toleration, the role of old and new media, the so-called Snowden affair, Arab Spring, freedom of speech, the constraints of public resistance and the impact of web 2.0;- to write a paper.This course will be of interest to students of media studies, political, political science, philosophy, sociology, journalism, economics, European Studies, international relations, law, and anyone reflecting on the relation between power, media and democracy.
