The European Consortium for Social Research (ECSR) and the European Science Foundation (ESF) TransEurope Research Network will be joining forces in 2007 to host a 5-day summer school (Aug. 27-31, 2007), followed by a two-day conference (Sept. 01-02, 2007) to be held in Groningen, the Netherlands. The aim of the summer school, entitled Globalization, Social Inequality and the Life Course: Comparative Methodological Approaches, is introduce junior researchers working in the area of social inequality and the life course and its relation macro-level changes such as globalization, Europeanization and transnationalization to the comparative methodological approaches.

The Summer School combines two elements of teaching and learning opportunities: (1) a set of lectures and seminars by eminent sociological practitioners, and (2) a set of workshops devoted to more in-depth analysis of specific issues, where participants’ own work can be discussed alongside that of the established sociologists. In this way, the Summer School seeks to combine traditional teaching methods with the opportunity for young researchers to receive direct, practical guidance.

The school will include both a theoretical introduction to the study of globalization, social inequality and the life course as well as applied methodological training using macro-level measures and micro-level life course data. Attention will be paid to collecting and constructing transnational comparative indicators, comparison of data sets, and creating and using comparative variables and indices for cross-country comparative analysis. Students will actively learn how to apply indicators to central life course transitions, including the transitions in the area of family sociology, labor market, immigration and the transition to adulthood.
