The city of the future is facing a wide range of challenges, from health, food security and energy provision to transport and climate action. Facing these challenges relates to smartening our cities by applying ICT and new governance models. In a Smart City big data and ICT are widely applied and smart incentives are used to spur adoption of small-scale and efficient solutions for energy and transport. This also requires new governance as the city of the future will be governed by a wide diversity of public, private and citizens%E2%80%99 organizations. In sum, the concept Smart City is about urban vitality, resilience competitiveness, and - ultimately %E2%80" and in the end a high quality of life.Establishing Smart Cities - or rather the transition from traditional to smart cities - generates a plethora of questions. How should we exploit the potential in our cities to achieve greater vitality, competitiveness and resilience when coping with less and more expensive resources and space? How to identify and exploit the added value of smart technologies in cities? How to empower civil society in ways that they contribute optimally to achieving smart cities? How should we manage the transition from traditional cities towards a smart cities? And how to design (evidence-based) smart governance that contributes to designing the smart city of tomorrow?
