Social Policies & Pragmatic Tolerance in Amsterdam is a summer programme created and run by the Summer Programmes Office of the Graduate School of Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. This three-week programme gives students an in-depth look at some of the social policies of the Netherlands. Subjects such as immigration, multiculturalism, drugs and sex work will be addressed by various prominent guest lecturers and educational site visits. Dr. Leon Deben will moderate and oversee the entire program as well as provide lectures on his areas of expertise. Students will be expected to complete all required reading for every class, complete small writing assignments, and a short presentation. Students will be from various universities around the world. An international classroom will lend to the overall learning experience for the students.

Target group
Applicants for this summer course must be at least undergraduate (Bachelor) students entering their 3rd or 4th year. A minimum of a 2.75 GPA is required. Students in a 3 year Bachelor's programme must have at least two years of undergraduate education completed.Students from any major are welcome to apply but at least one class in the social sciences is required. A general interest in the social sciences and an open mind are necessary

Course aim
Students will gain a unique look into Dutch social policies through lectures, readings and excursions.

Credits info
8 ECTS Upon successful completion of the course students will receive a transcript from the University of Amsterdam worth 8 ECTS (usually converted to 4 US Credits). Students are responsible for ensuring that their home university will accept the credits and final credit conversions need to be made by the home university.rn

Fee info
EUR 1500: Tuition includes:- Credit- All reading materials- All site visits- Lunch on class days- Welcome and farewell dinners- Transcript from the UvAPlus a 25 application fee. EUR 500: Housing, tentative. The Summer Programmes Office mediates housing for students. Students in the same programme are placed in the same building or as close to each other as possible. More information regarding housing will be given closer to the start of the programme to admitted students.
