The Art of Making Objects is a course designed by Korean-Canadian visual artist Helen Cho and is intended for participants who are interested in strengthening their conceptual approach to their practice as well as for those who want to gain a better understanding of what it means to %E2%80%9Cthink conceptually%E2%80%9D while making objects. With a strong focus on exploring the medium of ceramics and its artistic potential, Cho interprets the materials used in the classroom and their meanings, which include discussions of influential artists who explore object making with performance. Participants will research topics both as a group and individually. The final goal is not to create a finished ceramic object but to shape and develop contexts and conditions for further exploration, for example the performative qualities of ceramic objects. These qualities and their potentials will be investigated and reflected upon using a variety of diverse examples including performance, design, poetry and video. In dialogue with Cho, the participants will be challenged to produce new meaning through language and material in order to formulate new views on the functionality and non-functionality of handmade objects.
