Taught at the very centre of legal London, this course offers the chance to discover the reasons why the common-law system has had such an impact across the world.By examining primary and secondary sources, and through film, TV and visits to important London landmarks, we will look at the English legal system, exploring the basics of British law, and using historical context and its surroundings to discover the rich history of the system.With visits to local courts and Inns of court, students will experience the inner workings of the English legal system today, investigating the influences of the common-law system on legal systems around the world, and the future of the English system.The following areas will be covered within this course: - The History of British Jurisdictions; - The Development of the English and Common-law System; - Sources of Law; - The Courts System; - British Lawyers and Judges; - Criminal and Civil Law; - The Future of the English Legal System.
Target group
Pre-law and law students from around the world would benefit from this course, however anyone with a keen interest in how the English legal system works is welcome to apply.
Course aim
By the end of this course you will have a strong understanding of the development of the English common-law system and debates surrounding its continuing influence on the legal systems of the world.
