Discover Europe%E2%80%99s roots in this two-weeks course that takes you to the %E2%80%98Eternal City%E2%80%99: Rome, Italy. During this course you will make a voyage from Antiquity to the later Middle Ages, highlighting its politics, religious affairs and societal developments. See how these developments are also expressed in magnificent artistic accomplishments on its way.Once the capital of the glorious Roman Empire; then rival to the Florentine Renaissance; birthplace of the Baroque and location of the Vatican, beautiful Rome is in various ways the ancestor of modern Europe. And Rome is therefore the place for you to start exploring %E2%80%98The Making of Europe%E2%80%99. During this course you will make a voyage from Antiquity to the later Middle Ages, highlighting its politics, religious affairs and societal developments that found expression in magnificent artistic accomplishments on its way. We will be studying Rome%C2%B4s and Europe%C2%B4s history from inside and outside the classroom, since many of its iconic places exist still nowadays. We will visit the tangible remains of the Roman era and discover the beautiful (early) churches which were transformed in later times by geniuses like Michelangelo or Bernini and unravel the politics behind it. At the end of this course, students should be able to:%E2%80%A8%E2%80%A2 Describe and evaluate different of the historic developments of Europe, including Europe%E2%80%99s role on the world stage%E2%80%A8%E2%80%A2 Discern and analyse key factors in facilitating these developments%E2%80%A8%E2%80%A2 Demonstrate an understanding of political, socio-economic and cultural aspects of the European developments %E2%80%A8%E2%80%A2 Demonstrate this detailed and critical knowledge and understanding in written and verbal form.This course is offered by the China Europe International Summer School (CEISS) in collaboration with Universit%C3%A0 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome campus.
