The UN Human Rights Council: Guaranteeing Human Rights in Global Governance The course will cover the creative historical evolution and currently how-to-engage with the principal organ responsible for promotion and protection of human rights in the world. Beyond its creation from an academic idea to a diplomatic initiative in international affairs to ensure dignity and equality to the current campaigns to define and determine the direction of global human rights. Participants will learn about the important issues examined during the UN Human Rights Council sessions as well as the important instruments to implement the decisions in communities and countries where civil society demands a justice, equity and fairness for humanity. Significant study will review the important institutions of the UN Human Rights Councils including the Special Procedures, the Complaint Procedure, various Forums and the Universal Periodic Review. Of course, the ability for advocacy by peoples movements to inform, influence and impact international relations to guarantee human rights will be examined throughout the course. The course will also cover the main actors crafting the strategies to realize the recognized human rights enshrined in international human rights instruments.The intensive instruction will include direct interaction inside the actual UN Human Rights Council session allowing participants to observe the daily workings and also organize opportunities to directly interact with the determined voice of victims, decision-makers and diplomats in the foremost forum for fundamental freedoms. There will be education excursions of empowerment to meet with UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights staff as well as visit to other UN Specialized Agencies, Programs and Funds relevant to human rights. Informal conversation and creative debate with NGOs working directly at the UN Human Rights Council will provide insight into the main international institution responsible for human rights realization. The interactive experience allows for greater comprehension of multilateral diplomacy and the coordinated global human rights movement.

3 ECTS Participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the summer school and all necessary documentation to validate the course at their home university.
