Thinking City: Beyond Resilience
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
A unique interdisciplinary Summer School on city planning and city making, in collaboration with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). This year%E2%80%99s theme BEYOND RESILIENCE will focus on the question: How can cities not only withstand extreme unexpected changes, but benefit from them? How can crisis induce development towards more sustainable, stronger cities? How to act in a world that has become increasingly unpredictable? We have a tendency to construct solid cities, capable of withstanding minor shocks, but by doing this we automatically make them more vulnerable to the really big shocks. These can generate so-called %E2%80%9CBlack Swans%E2%80%9D - the frequent crises, system drop-outs and planning failures which we are facing today. Why not construct more dynamic cities, which can cope with unexpected negative and positive changes? This is the issue on which we will focus in the Summer School Thinking City 2015. We want to go beyond the increase of resilience, robustness and adaptability of cities, because these are mere survival techniques. With the Thinking City method, developed in Amsterdam, we aim to make our cities stronger, better and more sustainable.>> contact the GSSS Summer Programmes Office for more information: +31 (0)20 525 3776, e-mail: summer-info-gsss@uva.nl, Skype: summer-gsss-uva

Course leader
prof.dr. Zef Hemel

Target group
The course is open to all talented Master's and PhD students and professionals whose studies, work and life experience relate to the planning and development of cities - ranging from the fields of art, architecture, urbanism and planning, to economical, social, cultural and political sciences.

Course aim
During this course, you will work on a new generation of innovative solutions for urban issues, while simultaneously testing new working methods. Both students and young professionals will explore models of cooperative planning in interdisciplinary groups. The groups will work on case studies that are Amsterdam based and topical. A coalition of diverse actors in the city - citizens, companies and local government - will act as clients and conversation partners. As a result of the course, each group will create a narrative about the future of Amsterdam - a narrative that will inspire the city and will mobilise it for further action.
