PROGRAMMEThe Institute of Energy Systems and Environment offers a two week Summer School including internationally recognized lecturer teams comprised of academic staff, researchers and PhD students. All lecturers and experts involved have international experience and are experts in their fields. The theoretical and guided tours programme will have three main modules: sustainable energy production, sustainable energy consumption and social acceptance of technologies. First module will introduce students to various energy resources, alternative energy technologies, efficiency of energy production and resilience of systems. The theoretical part will be integrated with the practical work in laboratories of Institute and guided technical tours to the facilities of one of the largest energy producers in Latvia. Second module will focus on energy consumption in public and private buildings, energy use for industrial processes, energy consumption patterns in households, resource efficiency and industrial symbiosis. As previous the theory will be integrated with practical assignments and guided technical tours to several of the largest, newly built projects in Latvia. Final module will discuss the importance on social acceptance, role of demand side management and diffusion of innovations. Social experiments and role play game will be used for deeper understanding to theory. The practical part of the programme will have case study task. The task will be to develop 100 % renewable energy system for regional development in Kraslava city. In order to solve the task, the theoretical knowledge and ideas from technical tours given in the Summer School should be used. The elaborated solution will be presented by the Summer School participants to the representatives of Kraslava city and the Institute of Energy Systems and Environment. CREATIVE WORKSHOPSThe summer school participants will be working in groups under the assignments given by lecturers. The theoretical part of programme is closely integrated with guided technical tours, social experiments, role play games and final case study for Kraslava city (see Programme section for details). The use of modern learning methods and tools will be offering creative environment to work on task. The facilities used for Summer School are chosen to %E2%80%9Cbreak-ice%E2%80%9D between the participants and develop friendly and collaborative environment for discussions.EXCURSIONSAs integral part of the programme guided technical tours will be organized to one of the largest energy producers in Latvia: A/S Latvenergo (electrical and heat energy producer), Latgran Ltd. (wood pellet producer) and several largest, newly built public building National Library of Latvia (the building with triangular shape), a Centre of Culture %E2%80%9CGORS%E2%80%9D (21st century concert hall and theatre hall), a Centre of Creative Crafts %E2%80%9CZEIMU%C4%BBS%E2%80%9D (largest green roof area in Latvia). The guided tours are linked thematically and with the assignments to theoretical part of the Summer School (see Programme section for details).LECTURES AND PRACTICAL WORK1.
