Historical Epistemology and the Dynamism of Science (August 3rd to 21st)Career week: (August 24th to 28th)-Optional German language course: (July 20th to 31st) Short DescriptionFor a number of decades, the history of science has been at the forefront of innovation in the historical humanities. The staggering dynamism of scientific change, the continuous historical development of ever new theories, practices and technologies, has led to intense discussion about the very status of scientific knowledge in history and society. The discussion of this problem is known under the label of %E2%80%9Chistorical epistemology.%E2%80%9D Work on this problem has generated diverse approaches. Typically, in these approaches historical and philosophical explanation intersect. The course, which consists of shared readings and discussions, aims to introduce students to some of the most important recent attempts at accounting for scientific change and the historical character of scientific knowledge. We will read work by a diverse range of scholars including Ludwik Fleck, Gaston Bachelard, Thomas Kuhn, Michel Foucault, Steven Shapin, Hans J%C3%B6rg Rheinberger, Lorraine Daston and Bruno Latour.

Target group
This course is designed for students of humanities disciplines (from 2nd year onwards). The aim of the course is to read actual contributions to scholarly debate, but introductory level texts will also be provided. Previous knowledge of philosophy or history of science is not required.

5 ECTS 5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) for the Summer School or 6 ECTS if booked along with the optional German language course.

EUR 1850: The fee includes: the Summer School academic program, the career week and some extracurricular activities. Optional German language course not included (560 Euros)
