Target group
Students interested in hydraulic, environmental and sanitary engineering, urban planning, urban design, architecture, landscaping, and botanical engineering.
Course aim
Basic principles and approaches to stormwater management in urban areas(LID, SuDS, SUDS, WSUD, etc); Link between stormwater management and urban planning and design, retrofitting and renewal; Low-rise high density housing- Recommendations and key principles in the process of urban and architectural design, link with WSUD; Low-rise high density housing- Recommendations and key principles in the process of urban and architectural design, link with WSUD; Evaluating options for stormwater management in urban areas: Key physical characteristics, measures and application, Operational risks and design considerations including river training; Low-rise high density housing- Role and treatment of the open spaces; Open spaces in low-rise high density housing- possibilities of applying the WSUD concept; Criteria for WSUD implementation with Best Management practice. Guest lectures: The Danube in Vienna Changes of a near-natural river landscape to an urban area of extensive development with multiple functions; Stormwater management in Vienna with Austrian design standards Low-rise high density housing in Vienna Landscape design in view of stormwater management approaches in Vienna Field visits in Vienna: Field visit to stormwater management examples Field visit to LRHD area examples Field visit to landscape examples Field visit to LRHDH area case study Group project work: Title: "Analysis and application of storm water harvesting possibilities in selected LRHDH area". Main goals: - to improve the quality of open spaces by applying effective storm water harvesting principles, - to improve overall quality of life, - to reduce storm water flooding risk, and - to achieve economical benefits. Research methods: Empirical method; Observation; Analysis; Scenario. Content: 1. Analysis of area storm water harvesting capacity spatial and functional potentials & limitations of open spaces; Preliminary storm water detention volume assessment (table or graphic form) 2. Identification of appropriate open space types, possible measures and solutions for each of them, illustrations (recommendations - in the form of tables ) 3. Conceptual urban design solution (in appropriate scale) Group discussion. Presentation and discussion of project work. Rating of project work. You are expected to apply gained knowledge on link between hydraulic engineering and urban planning and design process, through improvement of the selected location. Selected teaching material and project works will be published after course completion. Publication name draft is 'Urban living with water-2014'.
Credits info
6 ECTS Participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the summer school and all necessary documentation to validate the course at their home university.

EUR 600: Reduced participation fee for students.Early registration bonus of 150 until the 31st of December.Later registration bonus of 100 until the 31st of January.Group discount of 150 (at least 4 participants).
