Exploding Yugoslavia
The lands of former Yugoslavia offer an ideal forum for examining the intersection for examining the clashing intersection of global languages and local cultures. The meaning of "Yugoslavia, " as it is represented in literature, as well as the literary and metaphorical tropes that represent its component nationalities opens a wide and provocative series of questions about the portrayal of a "conceptual region" with a global context.
Deserving of further attention is the way that wider theoretical discourses were and are incorporated into specific national discussions (Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Kosovar, etc.), as well as the manner in which the outside world applied and adapted its values to the south Slavic "situation."
This seminar invites papers on all aspects of Yugoslavia, including its origins, dissolution, and the successor states that have taken its place. It aims to foster a wider discussion of how the outside world has perceived this region, and how those in the region have responded in kind.
Topics may include:
- Literary portrayals of social relations
- Political depiction and representation
- Minority status and identity
- Media as art and propaganda
- Religious self-definition and ideology
- Other themes
