INTERNSHIP AT THE EASTWEST INSTITUTE, VRANJE OFFICE/SERBIA

The EastWest Institute (EWI) is searching for a suitable candidate for an internship at the Vranje Office in Serbia. The internship covers three months: October 2007 to January 2008.

The Intern will work to co-ordinate the implementation of a two-day workshop on negotiation and mediation skills and the production of two issues of the Youth Bridges magazine. The intern will be located in the EastWest Institute Vranje office and will be supervised by EWI Project Co-ordinator, Mr. Ljubisa Vrencev.

A brief description of the Intern''s responsibilities is as follows:


1. Liaising with project partners (Youth Council for Cross-Border Co-operation) for the implementation of the training workshop and the production an dissemination of two issues of the Youth Bridges magazine.

2. For the training workshop, this will iclude: assisting in the identification of trainers, organisation of logistics for the training (venue hire, travel arrangements, communication/ awareness raising of the event, co-ordination of translators/ equipment) and assisting with evaluation and reporting of the event.

3. For Youth Bridges, responsibilities include: organisation of co-ordination meeting, collation of articles/images for editing, supervision of editing, design and translation of each issue, liaising with Inter-Ethnic Project Kumanovo (IPK) for technical support.

4. Office administrative responsibilities, such as post, photocopying, handling purchase of minor office supplies, etc.

5. Assistance in maintenance and updating of GPKT contact databases and assistance with information dissemination.

6. Any other appropriate support as required.

Required qualifications include:

1. Competency in English or Albanian and Macedonian/Serbian is preferred.

2. Competency with basic computer work (Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet and Email).

3. Commitment and enthusiasm for multi-ethnic activities and support for EWI''s work.

Desirable qualifications include:

1. Previous experience with project implementation.

2. Previous experience with production of publications.

The Intern will work full-time, including the possibility of working one weekend during the implementation of the training workshop, with flexibility on hours depending on need and prior agreement with the supervisor. The Intern will receive an allowance of Euro 300 per month. The responsibility to provide for any taxation liability rests with the Intern.

EWI will endeavour to provide the Intern with on-the-job work experience in a number of areas relating to their duties, and to also provide opportunities for the Intern''s participation in more structured capacity building or training if possible. EWI will also provide full professional references for the Intern, in accordance

with their performance during the internship.

Project OverviewThe EastWest Institute (EWI) is a European-American `think and do tank'', which for 25 years has operated long-term projects that aim to reduce tensions and promote dialogue and mutual understanding in critical locations around the world. EWI''s cross-border co-operation project in Kosovo, southern Serbia and northern Macedonia (the `GPKT project'') works towards the core goals of conflict prevention andcommunity development in the four border municipalities that comprise the `GPKT'' micro-region Gjilan/Gnjilane (Kosovo), Presevo (Serbia), Kumanovo (Macedonia) and Trgoviste (Serbia). In addition to work with municipalities and central-level governments, the project targets civil society through several cross-border and multi-ethnic Working Groups the GPKT Education Committee, the GPKT Women''s Working Group, the GPKT Media Working Group and the GPKT Youth Council. The GPKTYouth Council is a cross-border multi-ethnic youth group drawn from the four GPKT municipalities, established in December 2004, which recently achieved status as independent NGOs in both Kosovo and Macedonia. The Council works for positive change in the GPKT communities, for youth empowerment, inter-ethnic relationship building, capacity building for action, and acts as a GPKT Youth Embassy.Project Activities



A two-day training workshop on negotiation and mediation skills. This training will be held during the autumn of 2007. The objectives of the workshop are to strengthen the skills of youth from the region in the areas of negotiation and mediation. Capacity building for skills'' development in areas related to conflict prevention and peacebuilding have been a key activity of the GPKT Youth Council Working Group, and coincide well with the YC4CBC''s goal of promoting good inter-ethnic relations, peace, and tolerance.

November 2007 Youth Bridges Issue. This issue will focus on the history and institutions of the European Union. Being published at a time when the Kosovo status decision has been a cause for much speculation and trepidation, this issue will approach the European integration process from a peacebuilding perspective. A presentation of the EC Youth in Action Programme will also be included in the publication, providing the opportunity to youth from the target region to feel part of the `European project''.

January 2008 Youth Bridges Issue. This issue of the magazine will focus on educational opportunities in Germany and will present the Goethe Institut and the DAAD. This issue will provide information that is difficult to access in the border municipalities and will also present interviews with students from this region studying in Germany and exchange students from Germany studying in this region. This issue will also include a report on the training workshop.
