The Institute is currently implementing a three-year comprehensive project on Human Rights and Democratisation in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This project aims to continue and promote human rights as a central part of the EU-Iran human rights dialogue, in which both parties have been engaged since 2002. The project is expected to raise legal awareness among the wider population and specific focus groups and encourage the adoption and implementation of major human-rights instruments.

The Institute is offering a number of internships for students who have a background in law, political science or media studies, to assist with the media-monitoring aspect of this project. We are currently looking for students who are based (i.e. resident) in Australia, France, Germany, Russia, Spain and the USA. Experience working in a university newspaper would be a plus, but not a prerequisite. It is, however, essential that the prospective interns are familiar with the print media in their countries of origin. They will be expected to work from home monitoring their own national media.

The media intern will interact closely with the rest of the project team by email. They will be required to submit monthly reports (over a three-month period) on the way issues pertaining to human rights and democracy in Iran are being reported in their national media. Interns must be self-motivated..

Requirements:

1. Level of education: registered in a degree programme or similar level in other countries (min. 3rd year law) or excellent final year LLB / MA or equivalent qualification).

2. Preferred courses: media studies, political science, human rights law.

3. Research and drafting skills: ability to analyse and draw conclusions in a clear and precise manner.

4. Language skills: fluency in English and in he language of the country where they are resident.

5. Computer skills: familiarity with Microsoft applications (Word, Access, Excel).

6. Strong organisation and communication skills.

7. Availability: be prepared to monitor the media from Mondays-Fridays for a minimum of three months (1-2 hours work a day, maybe less depending on the amount of coverage).

If you are interested in applying for an internship, please send a motivation letter by e-mail to v.kattan@biicl.org with a copy to internships@biicl.org, attaching your CV.
