The course offers a basic knowledge in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) with frequent reference to its practical application, which will enable course participants to make use of the relevant legal texts and apply IHL in their work.
In addition to IHL, relevant aspects of Human Rights Law and International Criminal Law will be covered.
Participants
This course is intended to suit diplomats and professionals of non-governmental organisations who are confronted in their every day work with situations governed by IHL. This includes diplomats in charge of dossiers relating to IHL, legal advisors not specialised in IHL and desk officers confronted with operational questions.
Admission
Participants are expected to have a background in law, political science or international relations and to work on a daily basis with legal or politico-legal issues (in the fields of human rights, humanitarian assistance or protection, arms control and disarmament, conflict resolution, peace building, etc.)
•Fluency in English.
•The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 30.
Costs
Travel and accommodation costs are to be covered by participants.
