York is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the UK. Situated almost exactly halfway between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast mainline, intercity trains provide fast and frequent connections to the two cities. Despite these attractive features, the cost of living is much lower than that in London and the south of England.

The Department of Economics at the University of York is one of the largest and most research active Economics Departments in the UK. It offers a vibrant PhD programme in Economics with, in 2013/14, some 50 students enrolled on the programme from 25 different countries.

PhD students in York benefit from close integration into research activities through the research clusters in
  • Applied Microeconometrics
  • Econometrics
  • Health Econometrics and Data
  • Historical Economics and Related Research
  • Macroeconomics/Finance
  • Microeconomic Theory

and close cooperation with a number of associated research centres at the University such as the internationally renowned Centre for Health Economics.
