Committee for Byzantine StudiesThere is a long tradition of research in Byzantine Studies in Oxford. The research programmes of MLitt and DPhil are supplemented by two taught postgraduate courses, the MSt and MPhil in Late Antique and Byzantine Studies. Applications for the latter degrees are considered by the Committee for Byzantine Studies.Programmes of studyThe MSt and MPhil are taught courses.MSt This is a nine-month course comprising a core paper on History, Art and Archaeology (focusing either on the late antique Roman Empire and its adjoining regions or on Byzantium), and two option papers in either Language and Literature (Greek, Latin, Slavonic, Armenian, Syriac, Arabic) or Auxiliary Disciplines (epigraphy, palaeography, numismatics, sigillography, papyrology, artefact studies) or a Special Subject (history, art and archaeology, literature, religion). Core and Special Subject papers are assessed by essays, the other papers by three-hour examinations. In a Special Subject candidates may choose to submit a 10,000-word dissertation in lieu of two 5,000-word essays. (Not all combinations are possible, and not every subject will necessarily be available every year.)MPhil This is a two-year course comprising a core paper on History, Art and Archaeology (focusing either on the late antique Roman Empire and its adjoining regions or on Byzantium), three option papers in either Language and Literature (Greek, Latin, Slavonic, Armenian, Syriac, Arabic) or Auxiliary Disciplines (epigraphy, palaeography, numismatics, sigillography, papyrology, artefact studies) or a Special Subject (history, art and archaeology, literature, religion), and a 30,000-word dissertation. (Not all combinations are possible, and not every subject will necessarily be available every year.)Research degrees It is possible to read for the research degrees of MLitt and DPhil in various areas of Byzantine Studies. In this case, candidates should apply to the faculty or school which covers the area of their proposed research topic (History, Classics, Medieval and Modern Languages, Archaeology, or Theology).Stavros J Costopoulos ScholarshipsUp to two scholarships are available for students taking up a place at Oxford in October 2007 to read for the MSt, MPhil or DPhil in the field of Byzantine Studies. The scholarship, open to home and overseas students, will cover University and college fees and maintenance, and is available for one year in the first instance.
