IUSM is a vocational university, the only Italian state university dedicated to sports and movement sciences.
It was created in 1998 when it replaced Romeas Istituto Superiore di Educazione Fisica (ISEF), whose activity had been focused on higher education for Ph.E. teachers. IUSM extended the ISEFas scope, to cover all the fields of interest related to human physical activity: scientific research, coaching for recreational sports and for high level competitive sports, teaching, fitness, re-education and rehabilitation, organization of sport events, management of sports facilities, etc.
IUSM is situated in the northern district of Rome; the area, known as Foro Italico, was built in 1932, when a number of impressive buildings and facilities were conceived as Romeas sports centre. The area represents a typical example of Fascist architecture, characterized by a wide use of white marble and triumphalist statues and obelisks.
The Olympic Stadium, at the back of the Institute, was built on the occasion of the Rome Olympic Games (1960) and has since been the venue of the World Championships in Athletics (1987) and of the World Soccer Championships (1990).
The Instituteas facilities include two track-and-field arenas, the Stadio dei Marmi - one of the Foro Italicoas outstanding features -, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 12 gymnasiums, 8 fully-equipped research laboratories, lecture halls and multimedia classrooms, a computer centre, a language centre, a specialized library, a video production centre and a medical
centre.
FACULTY AND PROGRAMMES
IUSM offers a three-year course for a Bacheloras degree in Movement Sciences (Laurea triennale), followed by a two-year Postgraduate degree (Laurea specialistica, basically equivalent to a master programme) in either Preventive and Adapted Physical Activity (Attivita motoria preventiva e adattata) or Management of Sports and Physical Activities (Management
dello sport e delle attivita motorie), or Sport Sciences and Techniques (Scienza e Tecnica dello Sport).
A two-year postgraduate programme for physical education teachers (Scuola di Specializzazione per laInsegnamento nella Scuola Secondaria a SSIS) is also available.
In the academic year 2004/05, a Ph.D. course (Dottorato di Ricerca) in aSport Sciences and Healtha started, in cooperation with the University of Cassino. Scholarships are granted by open competition.
IUSM also offers international programs in English, involving faculty and students from various countries and leading to degrees issued jointly by several partner Universities and equally valid in the various countries. So far, two such programs have been offered:
a a two-year European Masteras Degree in Preventive and Adapted Physical Activity organized in co-operation with the Universities of Cologne, Odense and Vienna, and the participation of the Universities of Athens, Bristol and Brussels in addition to private institutions and market operators.



A one-year European Masteras Degree in Physical Activity for Children and Adolescents, organized in cooperation with the Universities of Odense, Bristol and Clermont aFerrand and other partners, implemented in the context of the EU
declaration of 2004 as the year of education through Sport.
Combining the above experiences, a two-year European Master in Health and Physical Activity will be offered from 2006; the course is organized by IUSM in conjunction with the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI). Following a first year focused on health issues in general, second-year specializations will be offered, at various partner unversities, on such
issues as: Health and Fitness, Children, Elderly, Special Populations, Movement therapy.
A first-level Master degree on disability is also being organized by IUSM and other Italian and European institutions: the course will be held in the academic year 2006/07.
IUSMas strong involvement in the internationalization of the European university system is also witnessed by its role in a number of scientific and/in educational organisations (such as, the European College of Sport Science, the European Network of sport Science, Education and employment, the Thematic Network Aehesis, for the harmonization of Sport science curricula
in Europe, etc.), as well as by Socrates/Erasmus Intensive Programmes, in which IUSM actively takes part.

COURSES
Courses may last one or two semesters. Annual courses may be divided into two distinct semester-long sections, and students are allowed to take examinations covering the first part of the programme at the end of the first semester.
Teaching methods include lectures and practical work, as well as seminars and tutorials, where students play an active role. Lectures provide the basic framework of the course:
students are expected to organize their own homework in view of the examination. Tutors are always ready to help.
All courses are given in Italian, except those concerning the European Master.
Classes are scheduled in the morning and in the afternoon, Monday through Friday; each annual course usually requires 4 hours of lessons a week; semester courses usually require a higher number of lessons.
Erasmus students are allowed to follow all kinds of courses; however, please note that courses belonging to different degrees or to different academic years may have the same schedule and therefore it may be difficult, if not impossible, to attend classes.

Possible variations are posted on Department bulletin boards.
Foreign students are expected to attend classes.They should introduce themselves to the responsible Faculty members on the
first lesson and periodically report to them.

ACADEMIC CALENDAR
The Italian higher education system is based on the academic year, which is divided into two
semesters:
I semester: from the 1st week of October to the end of January. The Italian language course
for the 2007-08 starts on September 24th.
II semester: from March 1st to May 31st: the Italian language course for the II semester
starts on February 25th, 2008.
Examinations are held in February (1st semester) and in June/July (2nd semester). A third
exam session is scheduled in September.
On request, special exam sessions for Erasmus students may be scheduled during the last
week of January and May.
No teaching activity is offered on the following dates:

a Christmas holidays: from Dec. 21 st to Jan. 7 th;
a Easter holidays: from the previous Thursday to the following Tuesday;
