This course will examine the cultural dimensions of empires in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course will analyse the cultural dimensions of empire in relation to the political and economic developments and the relationship between the centre and the periphery. Students will discuss the historical background of various empires in the nineteenth and twentieth century, such as the British and French empires, Nazi Germany and the Chinese imperial empire, and will be introduced to the terminology and the academic debate. Issues that will be examined during the course include the direct and indirect forms of empire, civilizing missions, the role of culture and representation, and the complex cultural exchanges between the centre and the periphery.Excursions during the course to the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam and the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden are included in the program.This course is taught at Utrecht University (the Netherlands) as part of the China Europe International Summer School (CEISS). CEISS is a collaboration between Fudan University (China), Utrecht University (Netherlands), Freie Universitat Berlin (Germany), University of Copenhagen and Edvance Education International (China), and offers summer courses that explore the world's main economic, social and political trends and the way they impact on the economies and societies of Europe and China.This course can be combined with the following CEISS courses:- China, the US, Europe and the Rise of Asia- European Culture: Identities and Institutions- Global Challenges - Sustainable Futures

Target group
Students of the social sciences, including economics and business, political sciences, European studies, history, culture studies and sociology, the sciences and engineering at senior undergraduate or graduate level with an interest in culture, society and politics. A general background in the social sciences may help, but no specific expertise is required.
