This course will teach you the theoretical foundations of participatory evaluation and the practical skills necessary for conducting it. Key subjects include: participatory evaluation; complex problems; healthcare innovations; frame-reflective analysis; program verification, situational validation, societal-level vindication and social choice; interviewing techniques; coherence analysis; validation and justification; transformative evaluation; and transition management.Participatory approaches to evaluationWhich measures are effective in reducing the burden of disease associated with disorders such as depression, Alzheimer's disease, or ADHD?Which measures could lead to a more sustainable healthcare system?Answers to questions like these require thoughtful, empirically adequate and responsive evaluations of alternative and innovative strategies. They also require the integration of empirical and normative inquiries. We are becoming increasingly aware of how limited our conventional evaluation approaches are in answering complex questions like these. As an alternative, participatory evaluation approaches have been developed that involve multiple stakeholders such as physicians, patients, manufacturers, insurers, managers and policy makers. By taking into account multiple perspectives, we can apply these evaluations and their outcomes to a wider audience and implement any resulting recommendations. In this novel approach, evaluation is considered a process in which scientists, decision-makers, and advocates communicate to define relevant questions for analysis, to mobilize experts and expertise, and to interpret findings in specific ways. The emphasis here is on evaluation as a social learning process.Course contentOur faculty consists of researchers with ample experience in the field of participatory evaluation. Guest lectures will be held by leading evaluation scientists. During the course, you will apply the novel methodology to a case study and present your results on the final day. The course is supplemented with e-learning material developed under the auspices of Health Technology Assessment international. The course is closely affiliated with the research programme at the Nijmegen Center for Evidence Based Practice (NCEBP) and with one of the core objectives of Radboud university medical center: patient-centred care. This course is offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Management Sciences at Radboud University.
