Tip: Universitare Detalii: Uzbekistan, August 28 - September 24, 2006 August 28 - September 24, 2006Deadline for applications: June 30, 2006The 2006 Samarkand Summer School is jointly organised by the Italian Association for the Study of Central Asia and the Caucasus (ASIAC) and the Centre for the Study of Territory in Samarkand in the context of a collaboration project between the University of Turin, the University of Bologna, the State University of Samarkand (SamSU) and the Institute of Foreign Languages of Samarkand (SamSIFL).The Summer School is sponsored by the Institute of Foreign Languages of Samarkand and classes will take in its central compound building. Duration: four weeks.The 2006 session is structured as follows:1. Language training. Languages offered: Uzbek, Russian, Tajik. Daily classes are structured in individual and group sessions (of up to five students) according to need.2. Daily sessions dedicated to ~introduction to field research' in Uzbekistan. Some of the topics covered include:- State- and nation-building in Central Asia - Russian culture in urban context- Cultural traditions, folklore and religion - Archival research work in Uzbekistan- Social and historical research in urban centres - Labour resources management and education- Sociolinguistic situation in Central Asia- Environment, agriculture and the history of irrigation - The Samarkand countryside and rural studies- Community development projects- Archaeology and history of human settlement in the Zeravshan region- The Sogdian civilization - The city of Timur, its architectural heritage, arts and crafts
