Introduction and aim of the course

The use of geographic information systems (GIS) and Multicriteria Analysis (MCA) techniques is introduced for the development of spatial decision support systems for environmental tourism development through quantitative assessment of tourism potential related to climate, morphology, cultural and natural landscape resources.


Lectures, PC-based exercises and field trips to significant environmental tourism experiences, social activities aimed at informal exchange of experiences convey practical skills on the topic, in a strongly interactive environment.

Practical GIS operation

Web data retrieval

GIS analysis (landscape visual assessment, landscape suitability analysis for tourism, cost distance, accessibility, optimal path analysis)

MCA and MOLA

Hands-on exercise about a tourism opportunity study using GIS and MCA

Publication on Google Earth and web-based cartography

Teaching hours will be 9-13 and 14-17; additional self-study with PC exercises will be warranted from 17 to 20. Contact hours will include social activities afterhours.

Language will be English throughout the course.

PhD and postgraduate students, young researchers, professionals from the private sector and public administrations.

Accommodation and meals

The course fee does not include accommodation and meals. However, special arrangements with hotels and hostels are in place on initiative of the University of Bologna.
