US universities dominate world university rankings

In the 2008 THE-QS World University Rankings, US universities outperform many of their competitors. QS Top Universities looks at just how many US universities appear among the world's best.

Six US universities make up the 10 top universities in the world according to results from the latest THE-QS World University Rankings and Harvard University is the world's top university for the fifth year in a row.

In the 2008 results, 58 US universities appear in the top 200 universities with an overall 93 universities appearing in the top 400. Yale University also makes it mark in second place, having tied for the same spot last year.

There were significant changes in US university performances in the 2008 rankings. Cornell moved up five places to 15th; Michigan went up 20 to 18th; UCLA climbed 11 places to 30th; Berkeley went down 14 to 36th; Dartmouth moved up 17 to 54th; and UT Austin went down 19 to 70th.

Nunzio Quacquarelli, managing director of QS and co-editor of the Top Universities Guide says: "The 2008 edition of the THE-QS World University Rankings indicates that, once again, US universities dominate international recognition among leading academics and employers worldwide."
