The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary centre for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for the following positions: 2 PhD (m/f) in Atmospheric Sciences (2011-09)
The applicants will be part of the newly founded Hans Ertel Research Group Clouds and Convection in the Department The Atmosphere in the Earth System. Our group studies the behaviour of clouds, convection, boundary layer and microphysical proc-esses holistically with the goal of improving the representation of these processes in atmospheric models.
Our group is also affiliated to the Hans Ertel Zentrum for Weather Research, a network between German research institutions and the German Weather Service (DWD) and thus works in closed collaboration with DWD. One PhD project is offered on cloud structures during regime transitions. The project involves conducting large-eddy simulations of transition cases (e.g., from stratocumulus to shallow cumu-lus) to help identify regime limitations of process parameterizations and scaling laws.
The second PhD project focuses on the development of a stochastic boundary layer scheme to account for sub-grid variability in numerical weather prediction models.
