The University of Helsinki is one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world. The University will introduce a doctoral education system consisting of four doctoral schools and 32 doctoral programmes at the beginning of 2014. The goal of the reform is to improve the quality and efficiency of the doctoral education.

The University of Helsinki invites applications for 3 DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS in the Finnish Doctoral Programme in Economics for a 1-4 year period starting from 1.1.2014.

Description of the doctoral programme

The Finnish Doctoral Programme in Economics (FDPE) promotes doctoral education in Finland by systematically providing courses and seminars in economics. The programme was launched in 1990 and has received several recognitions for its high quality. It is currently organized by the Helsinki Center of Economic Research (HECER), which is a joint initiative of the three universities in the Helsinki area. HECER is the largest and most influential center of academic economics in Finland.



The FDPE is organized according to the best international practices. In their first year, students take mandatory core courses in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. In the second year, they choose between a large number of field courses. Subsequent thesis work is supported by regular workshops in different subfields of economics. The thesis is an independent piece of work containing research contributions at the international level. All teaching in the FDPE takes place in English.

HECER is a lively community of about 50 academic economists. The atmosphere is supportive and dynamic, and barriers between students and the faculty are low. Several weekly seminars and frequent international visitors are an integral part of the HECER learning experience. Close connections to the Government Institute for Economic Analysis (VATT), located in the same building as HECER, facilitate research and training in policy-oriented themes.

FDPE has an international student body and the faculty members have close international contacts. Faculty members publish regularly their work in leading academic journals. Our fresh doctors are well placed in international academic institutions, central banks, research institutes, government organizations, and in private sector.
