The mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region is a transition region between what is commonly referred to as ‘space’, and the atmosphere. It is strongly influenced by solar activity, both from solar radiation and solar energetic particle fluxes; and solar signals from the MLT region can propagate down into the lower atmosphere, even affecting surface temperatures, by coupling processes involving chemistry, radiation and wave-driving within the atmosphere.

In the three PhD positions offered, processes in the MLT-region and their coupling with the lower atmosphere will be investigated using satellite measurements and numerical models of atmospheric chemistry and dynamics.

The Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research (IMK) - Atmospheric Trace Gases and Remote Sensing (ASF) investigates dynamical, microphysical and chemical processes in the Earth’s atmosphere with the goal to understand, quantify and predict its natural variability and long-term changes. Accurate measurements of atmospheric trace gases from various observational platforms (ground-based stations, air craft, balloons, satellites) provide the data that are required for the modelling of atmospheric processes. Particular focus of the activities of IMK-ASF is to investigate the complex links and feedbacks between climate change, dynamics and transport, and atmospheric chemistry.

All positions are limited to three years. The salary group is 1 TV-L 13 (3 TVL-13 possible for especially well qualified or experienced candidates).



Candidates must hold a university degree in physics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics, and have both good programming skills in C/C++, Fortran, matlab or idl, and good communication skills in English. Experience in either atmospheric research, remote sensing, inversion techniques or numerical modelling are of advantage, but not required.
