Biomechanical Engineering
The Department of Biomechanical Engineering coordinates the education and research activities in the field of mechanical engineering techniques, like modelling and design, to analyse the interaction between biological and technical systems.
Precision and Microsystems Engineering
The research within the Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) Department is focused on developing the knowledge and technology for the realisation of small devices and systems, including microsystems and microelectronics.
Job description
The research focus of the PhD projects within the iMIT programme is on the mechanical design of instruments that incorporate optic fibres for tissue characterisation and effective signal transfer. The projects solve fundamental problems related to the use of fibres during bending and force application.
• The iMIT-ADAPT project will realise mechanisms for instantly adapting the instruments’ stiffness based on force information sensed by ferrule-top technology at the tip of the instrument.
• The goal of the iMIT-WASP project is the development of ultra-thin needles that can follow curved paths while penetrating tissue.
• The iMIT-FIBER project focuses on pressure effects in fibre optic measurements for medical diagnostics and aims to exploit the novel opportunities for measuring additional features of the tissue presented by the interaction between pressure and optical properties.
