Applications are invited for a BBSRC funded CASE D. Phil. Studentship in Clinical Medicine, supervised by Dr. Andrew Morris at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (WTCHG), University of Oxford.
CASE studentships are awarded jointly to academic and industrial partners, and provide an exciting opportunity to work with cutting edge data and leading scientists from both research environments.
For this studentship, the successful applicant will work with Prof. John Whittaker from the Statistical Genetics group and Dr. Julie Huxley-Jones from the Computational Biology group at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), spending one term per year at their site in Stevenage. Funding is available from October 2010 for three years, and will cover tuition and college fees at Linacre College, together with a GSK enhanced annual stipend.
The studentship will build on existing statistical genetics approaches to fully exploit publicly available databases of genetic association and expression studies, as well those available at GSK and the WTCHG. The studentship will improve methodology for eQTL analysis, identify genetic variants that are associated with disease and have a functional effect on phenotype, and contribute to the development of genetic predictors for disease or drug response for future use in clinical practice.
The successful applicant will join the Morris Group, headed by Dr. Andrew Morris, part of the Genetic and Genomic Epidemiology Unit (GGEU) at the WTCHG. The Morris Group focus on the development of novel statistical methodology for the analysis of genetic data such as that generated by genome-wide association studies and re-sequencing projects.
Applicants should have, or expect to have, a degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computing or a related subject. Experience with the analysis of genetic data would be an advantage, but not essential.
