The Abbe School of Photonics (www.asp.uni-jena.de) offers a three-years PhD studentship on a project related to applications of photonics to astronomy (astrophotonics [1]).
The incumbent will take part in research and development of high-tech astronomical instrumentation in the context of the Beutenberg Campus of the University of Jena (Germany - www.jena.de), a dynamical research environment with state-of-the art facilities for the fabrication of optical fibres (conventional and PCF) and for micro/nano lithography.
In particular, the topic of the PhD project is focused on photonic applications for astronomical interferometry [2] and/or coronography for observation of exo-planets [3]. The goal is the exploration of new technological solutions and the realization of prototypes to be tested at the 90 cm reflector of the University’s Observatory (www.astro.uni-jena.de). Part of the time may be employed to take part to astronomical observations in Jena or elsewhere.
The position is available from the earliest possible date. The studentship is worth 1440 euro/month (gross).
Applicants are expected to have a diploma or master’s degree in physics, preferably with experience in experimental optics.
