The Department of Geography and Geology of the Faculty of Science offers a PhD position on Earth Observation and Reducing Emission from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD) in South East Asia. The position is open for appointment from September 1st 2011.
The project will be an integral part of Work Package 3 (WP3) of the EU Framework Programme 7 funded project "Impacts of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and Enhancing Carbon Stocks (I-REDD+)", which is coordinated by the Department of Geography and Geology - see www.i-redd.eu.
The objective of WP3 is to monitor forest transitions and will be based on regional scale (Landsat and similar spatial resolution) and global scale (MODIS and similar spatial resolution) passive and active satellite remote sensing data augmented with intensive ground truthing campaigns. This will yield above-ground carbon stocks related to deforestation and forest degradation at the landscape to national level. The project works in Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and China.
Job description
The aim of the PhD position is to enhance our knowledge on the extent to which Earth Observation data analysis may improve estimates of forest transitions and degradation processes in the region and their influence on carbon stocks. The PhD student will look specifically at national scale monitoring of land-use changes from time series of global earth observation data useful to monitor the temporal evolution of forest dynamics and above ground carbon stocks. The student must be prepared for periods of field work in the case areas in South East Asia and will work together with other scientists of the I-REDD+ project.
Place of employment and work will be divided between the Department of Geography and Geology, ster Voldgade 10, 1350 Copenhagen and Geography Department, Humboldt-Universitt zu Berlin, Germany.
