The laboratory of Dr. Michael C. Schmid at the Ernst Strngmann Institute (ESI) for Neuroscience in Cooperation with Max Planck Society is seeking candidates for Ph.D. positions to study neurophysiological mechanisms and computational brain principles of visual perception. To this end, we offer projects in both experimental as well as computational neuroscience.

Experimental projects will apply parallel electrophysiological recording techniques in combination with optogenetics to investigate communication patterns between visual thalamic and cortical structures in the mammalian brain. Candidates should have a background in animal electrophysiology and behavioral training typically gained from studies in the fields of biology or psychology.

Computational projects use analytical methods to assess the correlational structure of brain signals. This includes the measurement of population coding in the spiking activity of neurons and connectivity analysis between brain areas. Candidates should have a strong background in analytical and computational procedures including fluency in Matlab gained from their studies in physics, mathematics, computer or cognitive sciences.
