Department of Agriculture and Ecology, Faculty of Life Sciences at University is offering a PhD scholarship commencing 1st of September 2011 or soon thereafter. The scholarship is funded jointly by the Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research (SDC) and the Faculty of Life Sciences, University.of Copenhagen of Copenhagen.
Project description
With reference to the Ph.D. education regulation of SDC and KU-LIFE, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research in relation to the theme of "Water and Sustainable Environment in SDC. The fellow is expected to spend a minimum of 12 months at partner institutions in China.
The overall aims of this project are to optimize resource use efficiency by better management of water and nutrients through temporal and spatial irrigation and fertilization strategies in field crops; and to evaluate the environmental impact of those strategies in terms of carbon sequestration in the agro-ecosystems.
In this Ph.D. project focus will be on dynamics of water and nutrients in the rhizoshpere and their influences on soil microbial activity, nutrients availability, root growth and physiology for water and nutrients uptake. Isotopic labelling techniques (15N and 14C) will be used to trace the fate of N and C in the soil-plant system.
