Description
In recent years, the development of low-emision, ''green'' combustion systems with lean premix combustion and low operating temperatures has become a priority. However, such systems are particularly prone to combustion instabilities. Such instabilities arise from a three-way coupling between sound, combustion and vortices in a combustion chamber, and they can cause very expensive damage.
TANGO is a multi-disciplinary research and training programme, funded by the European Commission under Framework 7, which focuses on combustion instabilities. TANGO is motivated by the need for cleaner combustion technologies and reduced emissions; it is an initiative, which will help to understand and prevent combustion instabilities. Through fundamental studies, TANGO will give physical insight into the relevant mechanism and develop modelling tools. On the applied side, TANGO will develop active and passive control methods to allow safe operation of gas turbines and domestic burners on a variety of fuels and operating conditions.
