KTH in Stockholm is the largest and oldest technical university in Sweden. No less than one-third of Sweden’s technical research and engineering education capacity at university level is provided by KTH. Education and research spans from natural sciences to all branches of engineering and includes architecture, industrial management and urban planning. There are a total of just over 14,000 first and second level students and more than 1,700 doctoral students. KTH has almost 4,600 employees.

KTH Computer Science and Communication is one of the most outstanding research and teaching environments in Information Technology in Sweden with activities at KTH and partly at Stockholm University. We conduct education and research in both theoretical and applied computer science. Theoretical computer science ranges from theory building and analysis of mathematical models to algorithm construction, implementation and simulation. Applied computer science covers a wide spectrum from computer vision, robotics, machine learning, high performance computing, visualization, computational biology, neuroinformatics and neural networks, and speech and music communication. We also conduct applied research and training in media technology, human-computer interaction, interaction design and sustainable development.

KTH School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) announces a PhD position in High-Performance Computing at High Performance Computing and Visualization (HPCViz) department.

The Department of High Performance Computing and Visualization focuses on developing new concepts for improved usage of high performance computer systems, including algorithms, programming environments, tools, and the analysis and synthesis of visual data. The department also has strong links with the PDC - Center for High Performance Computing that operates national supercomputing resources, including a 305 TF Cray XE6 system named Lindgren. The department takes part in high profile EC projects in the field of High Performance Computing, including the exascale flagship project “CRESTA” and has a focus on programming models, runtime systems, and performance tools for exascale computing.

The goal of the project is to investigate efficient communication parallel libraries for scaling to millions of cores/processing elements on the road to exascale. The objective is to extend message passing (MPI 3.0) and PGAS (Fraunhofer’s GPI library) approaches towards exascale. In particular, the project deals with two main issues: development of innovative algorithms of collectives in MPI and how to push the PGAS approach, considered to be one of the approaches with the highest potential for massive scaling. How to combine message passing and PGAS programming model is a topic of this project also. The project will contribute to a new EU Project “Exascale Programming Models - EPiGRAM”.

This is a four-year time-limited position that can be extended up to a year with the inclusion of a maximum of20% departmental duties, usually teaching. Doctoral students must be registered at KTH. The starting date is open for discussion, though ideally we would like the successful candidate to start as soon as possible.
