The position offers the possibility to acquire a broad range of analytical and conceptual skills within environmental analytical chemistry, atmospheric chemistry and biogeochemistry. The Ph.D. student would join an internationally recognized group of researchers and have full access to state-of-the-art field sampling and analytical facilities. Our research-oriented department hosts a large, active and international Ph.D. student group and the students would also be immersed in the interdepartmental Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research, a national centre of excellence at Stockholm University.
Terms of employment for EU Initial Training Network (ITN) Ph.D. Fellowships
The Stockholm-based fellow would be part of the 16 Ph.D. student cohort of the CSI:ENVIRONMENT program located through the 12 Partner organizations of the ITN. The highly selective ITN program offers full Ph.D. salary benefits (incl. social security insurance) and additional benefits to the fellow including monthly living and mobility allowance as well as a personal travel allowance. The fellow must be an early-stage researcher (less than 4 years of research/training experience since obtaining a University degree qualifying for entering into Ph.D. programs. The fellow must not have lived more than 12 months in the preceding 36 months in the host country (Sweden) at the start of the Ph.D. program. The ITN program also offers many opportunities to the cohort for joint training courses and study visits.
Ph.D. thesis on isotope-based studies of sources and transformation of trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is part of the natural chlorine cycle and is also a widespread anthropogenic pollutant, present in rain, soil and groundwater. This Ph.D. thesis aims to investigate sources and environmental fate of TCA, primarily by compound-specific analysis of chlorine and carbon isotopes in samples from laboratory experiments and the environment. The fellow will perform both theoretical and practical tasks in this project, e.g. project management, experimental planning and execution, field sampling and data interpretation.
