In the project cooperation exists with other scholars (including Prof. dr. Judith Frishman, Leiden University and Prof dr. Maleiha Malik, King’s College London) and social partners (among which the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security). Applications are now invited from excellent candidates who wish to conduct empirical research on the complex present-day relations between Jews and Muslims in Amsterdam and London, in the light of their local, national and international (historical, social, political) contexts. One project focuses on Amsterdam, the other on London.
Project description
The two projects aim to describe and analyze the relations between Jewish and Muslim groups in Amsterdam (project 1:13-337) and London (project 2:13-338). Representations and practices will be analyzed. The focus is on forms of opposition as well as on forms of cooperation. Jewish - Muslim relations will be studied within a theoretical framework that is rooted in the work of Pierre Bourdieu, complemented by theories the dynamics of interreligious conflict and cooperation. Various methods of qualitative research will be used.
Tasks
Tasks will include:
- Completion and defence of a PhD thesis within four years;
- regular presentation of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences, and three peer-reviewed articles to be co-authored with other researchers of the group;
- participation in the training program of the relevant research school.
