A position as a PhD Research Fellow in Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering, University of Southern Denmark in Odense is available as of July 1st or as soon as possible hereafter for a three-year period.

The PhD fellowship is under a Strategic Research Counsel funded project (SYMBIO)

Project description
This PhD study involves investigation of membrane technologies for optimal injection of hydrogen into an anaerobic digester. In the digester methanogens will convert carbon dioxide and hydrogen into methane by a well known process and thus eliminate the carbon dioxide from the biogas otherwise produced. The process is very delicate with respect to partial pressure of the hydrogen and need a very close control for application. In this study both methods for optimal distribution of hydrogen via an immersed membrane system and the control of the process will be the object for research. Experiments will be with pilot- or full scale equipment with the objectives of:

1.Identify and investigate potential membrane distribution systems technologies for gas distribution and gas transfer mechanisms on a bacteriological level.

2.Document results of gas injection efficiencies and gas transfer characteristics with appropriate analytical techniques.

3.Pilot- and full scale testing of injection methods

4.Documentation of the overall gas upgrading efficiency
