The SCORE team at Universit de Lorraine and Inria (Nancy, France) is looking for candidates for a Ph.D offer in the area of Distributed Systems and Computer Supported Collaborative Work. This PhD will be funded through an European STREP project and will be supervised by Pascal Urso and Franois Charoy.
Data constraints in large scale collaboration
The infrastructures supporting current web applications rely on data replication to ensure scalability, fault tolerance and high-responsiveness. This replication is done at a planetary scale, across several data centers and millions of potentially mobile user devices. Data can be modified concurrently. Due to network latency and mobility, the system must ensure the consistency of replicas.
The CAP theorem states that is impossible to ensure at the same time strong Consistency, data Availability and Partition tolerance. However, lower level of consistency are achievable at such a scale. On collaborative applications, user require the availability of their data and to be able to work in disconnected mode, while tolerating temporary inconsistency.
