Today's video editing tools support video professionals in certain basic video manipulation tasks, for instance by enabling the application of basic filters to a sequence of frames. In practice, however, much more advanced video processing tasks are often required, which - even today - are fulfilled by manual touch-up of individual video frames.
Examples for such more complex tasks are:
- tracking and removal of certain dynamic objects in videos - e.g., objects or persons in the foreground that occlude the actual scene one wanted to film.
- changing the spatial and/or temporal arrangement of actors in a scene during post-production, which is also very relevant in production of stereoscopic 3D footage where scene composition has to be adjusted to specific display settings.
- Conversion of footage originally filmed in 2D to 3D which requires a combination of segmentation, depth reconstruction and dynamic scene inpainting.
